On November 13, 1981 (42 years ago), Wayne Erickson and his brother Ron Erickson created a relational database for personal computers and formed MicroRim. RIM was an acronym for Relational Information Management.

The earliest version released by Microrim was called R:BASE 4000 and was released in 1983.

Privately funded and ultimately venture-backed, the MicroRim database products achieved significant market share in the mid-1980s in what was dubbed by some the "database wars" between R:BASE and the market share leader, Ashton-Tate's dBASE. One MicroRim ad stated, "R-way versus D-hard way," a jab at the less relational dBASE architecture. MicroRim adhered to the rules of the father of relational database technology, Edgar F. Codd, and prided itself on the elegance of its code.

In the mid-1980s, when Microsoft did not have its own database, it obtained a license to resell R:BASE in Europe to have a full suite of software products.

With Microsoft's increasing presence and aggressive marketing in the ’90s, the new owners of R:BASE; Abacus Software Products, could not keep up with the competition and had to trim the company in Bellevue, Washington.

On Friday, March 13, 1998, a die-hard and well-known R:BASE Developer, Razzak Memon, received a phone call from the President of Abacus Software to acquire R:BASE intellectual property and continue R: BASE's life. After discussing with his wife Donna and son Rafee (at age 8), putting their life’s savings at risk, Razzak formed R:BASE Technologies in June 1998, starting with R:BASE Version 6.1a.

Ranging from stand-alone applications to small businesses, large corporations, and state and federal agencies, R:BASE has served the needs of our customers around the world and has been pivotal to the success of many developers.
